Former CHP Chairman Hikmet Çetin hospitalized

It was reported that former CHP Chairman, former Minister of Foreign Affairs, and former Deputy Prime Minister Hikmet Çetin suddenly fell ill at the hotel where he was staying in the Çeşme district of İzmir for the Ramadan Feast holiday.

It was reported that Çetin, who was taken to the hospital, suffered a blood clot in his brain. It has been learned that 88-year-old Çetin, who received treatment at the hospital for a while, is in good health.

Hikmet Çetin was born in 1937 in the Lice district of Diyarbakır. He began his education there, then continued his academic career at Ankara Atatürk High School and the Faculty of Political Sciences at Ankara University, Department of Economics and Finance. Çetin, who started working at the State Planning Organization (DPT) in 1960, thus began his rise through the ranks of the state.

He received education at prestigious institutions in the USA such as Williams College and Stanford University. His work, particularly on development economics and planning models, helped him develop. In 1971, he became the Head of the Economic Planning Department at the DPT.

He entered politics in 1977 and was elected as a CHP Istanbul Deputy. He served as Minister of State and Deputy Prime Minister between 1978-79, and as Minister of Foreign Affairs in 1991. He played important roles in Turkey's critical foreign policy steps.

After the merger of the CHP and SHP in 1995, Çetin was elected CHP Chairman, but left the post the same year. In 1997, he became the Speaker of the Grand National Assembly of Turkey. He received widespread appreciation for his policies of consensus and balance in this role.

In 2004, he was appointed as NATO's Senior Civilian Representative in Afghanistan. He successfully represented Turkey in the international arena. Although he received an offer for membership in the Presidential High Advisory Board in 2019, he declined this position.
