Former MP Aysel Tuğluk released

Former Member of Parliament Aysel Tuğluk was detained by police who arrived at her home, citing an ongoing investigation into "propaganda" charges related to a speech she gave in Hakkari in 2012.

REFERRED TO THE COURTHOUSE

Tuğluk, whose 10-year prison sentence execution had been postponed for one year by the Kocaeli Chief Public Prosecutor's Office due to health reasons, was taken to the courthouse after a medical check following her detention.

Appearing before the judge at the Istanbul 24th High Criminal Court, Tuğluk, who suffers from dementia, stated that she could not answer the questions asked and did not remember. Her lawyers also presented to the court the release decision previously issued by the court based on the Forensic Medicine Institute's (ATK) report stating that she "cannot remain in prison." The court recorded Tuğluk's statements, "I cannot answer the questions, I do not remember," into the minutes as her testimony.

RELEASED

The Association of Lawyers for Freedom (ÖHD) stated in a post on its Twitter account, "Aysel Tuğluk, for whom an execution postponement decision was issued due to her dementia, has been released."
