Crisis in the AKP: That legislative proposal pits 2 AKP members against each other!
AKP MP Serkan Bayram, who brought President Erdoğan's proposal to make March 21 an official holiday to the Turkish Grand National Assembly without consulting his party, faced a reaction from the party's new name, Kürşad Zorlu.
MHP leader Devlet Bahçeli's call for a "new solution process" in Parliament was immediately met with a "lay down arms" message sent by PKK leader Öcalan from İmralı.
In the shadow of the ongoing talks between the ruling party and the DEM Party, President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan proposed that Nevruz be declared an official holiday. This proposal stirred up the political corridors of Ankara.
BAYRAM TOOK ACTION WITHOUT CONSULTING THE PARTY
Shortly after Erdoğan's statement, AKP Istanbul MP Serkan Bayram took an unexpected step.
According to a report by Nefes Gazetesi, Bayram submitted a legislative proposal to the Speaker of the Turkish Grand National Assembly to declare March 21 Nevruz a public holiday without consulting the AKP parliamentary group or relevant party boards. The proposal created a crisis due to both its timing and the lack of intra-party communication.
KÜRŞAD ZORLU REACTED
Kürşad Zorlu, who transferred from the IYI Party to the AKP and was soon appointed to the Presidency's Department of Relations with Turkic States, expressed his discomfort with Bayram's move.
According to rumors in the political corridors, Zorlu made various attempts to prevent the proposal from reaching the public eye. However, the controversy grew even further.
