Currency crisis at the Socialist International! Statement from Sezai Temelli
DEM Party Group Deputy Chair Sezai Temelli responded to criticisms that the 'Free İmamoğlu' sign was not removed at the Socialist International meeting. Temelli stated, "Our party removed the sign, but it was not in front of us."
The Socialist International, which has 89 member parties from 81 countries, met in Istanbul hosted by the CHP.
Spanish Prime Minister and Socialist International President Pedro Sanchez was hosted by CHP Chairman and Socialist International Vice President Özgür Özel.
The Socialist International Council Meeting was held at a hotel in Beşiktaş. Ekrem İmamoğlu, the Mayor of Istanbul and President of the Union of Municipalities of Türkiye, who has been imprisoned since March 23, sent a message to the meeting from Silivri.
DEM Party Co-Chair Tülay Hatimoğulları and DEM Party Group Deputy Chair Sezai Temelli also attended the meeting.
Following the reading of İmamoğlu's message, signs reading 'Free İmamoğlu' were held up in the hall.
While the fact that DEM Party MP Temelli and Co-Chair Hatimoğulları did not hold up the signs sparked debate on social media, Temelli was asked about the issue after the meeting.
STATEMENT ISSUED
In his statement to journalists, Temelli said, "Our party held it up, but it was not in front of us. We are absolutely fighting for the end of political imprisonment in Türkiye, both for Mr. Ekrem, Mr. Demirtaş, and Ms. Yüksekdağ. Furthermore, Mr. Ekrem is also our joint candidate for mayor through the city consensus. We do not see Mr. Ekrem as just a CHP candidate; he was our joint candidate, he was elected through city consensus. He was a mayor we greatly enjoyed working with."
