Sözcü and Nefes newspapers censor Özgür Özel's boycott list

Republican People's Party (CHP) Chairman Özgür Özel met with the public once again last night in Saraçhane, Istanbul, within the framework of the protests that began following the arrest of Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu, and made significant statements.

In his speech, Özel stated, "There are those who pledge allegiance to Mr. Tayyip. There are businessmen behind him. There are media institutions," and called for a boycott of certain media outlets and brands.

While the brands he called to boycott received extensive coverage in independent media, some of the brands and companies on this list were censored by Sözcü and Nefes newspapers.

When reporting on Özel's boycott call, Sözcü omitted the names of the brands and clearly censored them, including only the phrase "boycott call."

On the newspaper's website, the names of brands such as "Espressolab," which were mentioned in the boycott list, did not appear at all.

In his speech, Özel specifically drew attention to the Espressolab brand, stating, "I love all kinds of coffee... Turkish coffee, filter coffee, I love them all. Drink whichever you like, but never drink it from Espressolab! They supposedly want to take over the campuses... We will not stop by Espressolab on campus, we will not drink their coffee."

However, no details regarding this statement were shared in Sözcü's printed newspaper or on its website.

Furthermore, Nefes newspaper similarly showed that it did not publish Özel's boycott call in its report and censored the brand names. This censorship raised questions about the newspapers' policies and their relationships with certain brands.
