The idea of meeting with İmralı came from him first!

Developments regarding the İmralı visit, which is shaping Turkey's agenda, continue. Following the terrorist organization PKK's decision to dissolve and its announcement of withdrawal from Turkey on October 4, 2024, the visit to İmralı has become one of the most important political agenda items in Turkey. The decision on the matter will be made at the National Solidarity, Brotherhood, and Democracy Commission meeting to be held today at 14:00.

İMRAI VISIT TO BE DISCUSSED

The 18th meeting of the commission will address whether or not to go to İmralı. This meeting could determine the effects of the talks to be held with terrorist leader Abdullah Öcalan in İmralı on Turkish politics.

The stances of political parties on the issue are also becoming clearer. Following the MHP and DEM Party, the AKP has also approached the visit positively, while it has been reported that the CHP has not yet finalized its decision regarding the İmralı visit.

The CHP leadership announced that a separate internal evaluation meeting was held with commission members and that the decision would be clarified before the commission vote.

MIT UNDERSECRETARY: "VISIT IS NECESSARY"

In the previous meeting of the commission, the assessment made by MIT Undersecretary İbrahim Kalın drew attention. It emerged from the minutes of the 17th meeting held on November 18 that Kalın stated that visiting İmralı was "necessary."

In a statement made by CHP commission member Sezgin Tanrıkulu regarding Kalın's remarks, it was stated that the MIT Undersecretary's comments were very clear and that he indicated this visit was necessary.

In response to Kalın's remarks, Tanrıkulu said the following:

“Mr. Chairman, yes, we listened to the MIT Undersecretary, and he truly used satisfactory expressions on this matter. He clearly stated why it is necessary. However, I am of the opinion that: I do not think this is in accordance with the working method of this Commission. No voting or negotiation has been conducted regarding the institutions heard to date; requests were received and decisions were made. In the current process, at the most important stage of the process, I do not find it correct as a method to hold a vote for such a meeting. I suggest that a decision be made and that it be discussed with the groups."

TURKEY'S EYES ARE ON THE COMMISSION'S DECISION

The meeting to be held today will be a critical turning point in terms of what decision the commission members will make regarding the visit to İmralı. This decision is considered a development that could have long-term effects not only on the future of the talks in İmralı but also on Turkey's domestic and foreign policy.
