Had rejected the HEDEP abbreviation: Court of Cassation's 'DEM Party' decision

The Court of Cassation, which did not permit the HEDEP abbreviation of the Peoples' Equality and Democracy Party, has accepted the party's new short name, 'DEM Party'.

The Greens and Left Future Party (Green Left Party) changed its name to the Peoples' Equality and Democracy Party at its 4th Extraordinary Congress held on October 15, 2023. The party's short name was determined as HEDEP.

COURT OF CASSATION HAD NOT ACCEPTED HEDEP

The Office of the Chief Public Prosecutor at the Court of Cassation, to which the change was reported, did not accept HEDEP on the grounds that it resembled the previously closed People's Democracy Party (HADEP). The Chief Public Prosecutor's Office argued that this similarity was contrary to the Law on Political Parties.

With a letter sent to the party, it was requested that the HEDEP abbreviation be changed. Upon this, the party changed its short name to DEM Party on December 11.

NUMBER OF POLITICAL PARTIES ROSE TO 141

The Office of the Chief Public Prosecutor at the Court of Cassation has accepted DEM Party as the short name of the Peoples' Equality and Democracy Party.

The change was also reflected on the official website of the Office of the Chief Public Prosecutor at the Court of Cassation. The party's short name, DEM Party, and its new logo were also included on the site.

On the other hand, it was observed that the application of the Green Left Party (YSP), which was re-established on November 24 following the DEM Party change, was also accepted. The number of political parties accepted by the Court of Cassation has reached 141.
