Ahmet Mehmetalioğlu, who drew backlash on social media for his remarks regarding the passing of artist Volkan Konak, had previously targeted Republican People's Party (CHP) Chairman Özgür Özel. The Presidency of Religious Affairs (Diyanet) announced that an investigation had been launched into Mehmetalioğlu.

Mehmetalioğlu had been appointed as a preacher to Kocaeli, but this appointment was canceled, and he was brought into a new role in Istanbul. In a statement on his social media account, Mehmetalioğlu said, "The Diyanet played a joke on Özel. I will not be able to come to Kocaeli. Because, as a result of your intense prayers and support, the Kocaeli assignment was canceled."

Stating that he will continue his duty as an Istanbul Provincial Preacher, Mehmetalioğlu said, "At least until the decision to be made by the administrative court. Or rather, until the decision to be made by my Lord, my Representative, who is the owner of all positions." Furthermore, noting that he could be appointed to different positions in the future, he added, "This decision could be membership in the High Board of Religious Affairs on July 3, it could be a general directorship, or it could be an overseas consultancy."

Mehmetalioğlu's statements and the appointment process have sparked controversy in the public eye.
