He reminded of those words by Erdoğan: 'What you say in Ankara will be brought up against you in Athens'
Journalist and author Murat Yetkin, in an article written following President Tayyip Erdoğan's interview with Kathimerini before his visit to Greece, recalled Erdoğan's past remarks and stated, "As U-turns become more frequent, the impact of harsh rhetoric diminishes."
Journalist and author Murat Yetkin recalled the words President and AKP Chairman Recep Tayyip Erdoğan had previously said regarding Greece, following the interview Erdoğan gave to Kathimerini ahead of his visit to the country.
"Erdoğan's contacts in Athens on December 7 are a new example of his harsh rhetoric being followed by mild actions," Yetkin said, continuing his article as follows:
"WHAT YOU SAY IN ANKARA WILL BE BROUGHT UP AGAINST YOU IN ATHENS"
"He is, of course, considering the US and EU dimensions, as well as the foreign investment aspect, of improving relations with Greece. Our elders have said, 'Take a big bite, but don't speak big'; it is a Turkish proverb.
These outbursts and U-turns by Erdoğan have crossed the threshold where they can be explained with decorative phrases like 'a successful foreign policy that takes a stance according to changing conditions.' As U-turns become more frequent, the impact of harsh rhetoric diminishes. Of course, every country should do what its own interests require at that moment. But this does not require you to do or say the harshest thing that comes to your mind to your counterparts beforehand.
Then, what you say in Ankara is brought up against you in Athens; just as Kathimerini did."
