CHP Şanlıurfa Deputy Mahmut Tanal carried out a striking protest to support Adıyaman Mayor Abdurrahman Tutdere, who was placed under house arrest and suspended from his duties. Tanal, who went to the front of Tutdere's home in Adıyaman, tied a rope to his leg and held a press statement with the citizens gathered there. In his statement, Tanal argued that the house arrest was unlawful and said that the decision targeted not just one individual, but the people of Adıyaman and democracy itself.

“THIS IS A SHACKLE, THIS IS OPPRESSION”

Starting his statement by pointing to the rope tied to his leg, Tanal said, "What you see here is a shackle," and continued:

"By sentencing our Mayor, Mr. Tutdere, to house arrest, shackles have effectively been placed on his feet and wrists. However, this shackle has been placed not only on Mr. Tutdere but on the people of Adıyaman, on democracy, on justice, and on the rule of law."

“THIS DECISION IS NEITHER LEGAL NOR CONSCIONABLE”

Citing Article 13 of the Constitution, Tanal stated that the house arrest decision was disproportionate and did not serve the public interest. His statement included the following remarks:

"Article 13 of our Constitution states that 'penalties imposed must be measured, proportionate, and in accordance with the public interest.' Placing Mr. Tutdere under house arrest provides no benefit to Adıyaman. This decision is neither legal, nor conscionable, nor legitimate within the constitutional framework."

Mahmut Tanal, who did not untie the rope from his leg during his protest, later greeted CHP Chairman Özgür Özel, who had come to visit the house-arrested Abdurrahman Tutdere, at the door in the same manner.
