HKP Founding Chairman Nurullah Efe Ankut sent to prison for 5-month sentence

The People's Liberation Party (HKP) has announced that its Founding Chairman, Nurullah Efe Ankut, has been sent to Maltepe Prison to serve a finalized 5-month prison sentence.

In a statement issued by the HKP Central Committee, it was noted that Ankut had been under house arrest for 117 days. The statement claimed that Ankut has been sentenced to nearly 15 years in prison to date, and that approximately 40 years of imprisonment are being sought in ongoing cases.

The party's statement further expressed that the revocation of Ankut's party chairmanship and membership by a Court of Cassation (Yargıtay) ruling has been finalized, and that he has been issued a political ban. Following this development, it was recalled that Mustafa Şahbaz was appointed as chairman at the HKP's 1st Extraordinary General Assembly.

The HKP statement also addressed the legal processes concerning Ankut and the change in party leadership.

The statement also touched upon party members who were detained during an anti-NATO protest held in front of the First Parliament on July 5. The HKP argued that 13 people are still being held in custody during this process.

Arrests, detentions, and pressures cannot intimidate us.

— HKP Central Committee statement

The party characterized the sending of Ankut to prison as a step aimed at hindering their political struggle.
