How AKP-run municipalities clear their SGK debts revealed: They use this method

The debts of municipalities to the SGK and the resulting foreclosure proceedings were the primary agenda item at the Social Democratic Municipalism Council (SODEMBEK) meeting organized by the CHP in Ankara.

The meeting was held at the party headquarters under the coordination of CHP Deputy Chairman Gökan Zeybek. The 20-member council, consisting of 14 metropolitan and 6 district mayors from across Turkey, was attended by Istanbul Metropolitan Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu, Ankara Metropolitan Mayor Mansur Yavaş, Izmir Metropolitan Mayor Cemil Tugay, and other metropolitan and district mayors.

'IF RESOURCES ARE NOT PROVIDED TO MUNICIPALITIES...'

According to the report by Başak Kaya from Sözcü; while AKP-run municipalities have their SGK debts offset against their real estate to clear them, this opportunity is not extended to opposition-run municipalities.

CHP mayors stated, "The government's goal is to make us unable to function and unable to pay salaries. The collective bargaining process will begin soon. If SGK debts are not restructured and new resources are not provided to municipalities, we will struggle to pay salaries."

'INTEREST SHOULD BE WAIVED'

The mayors noted that they have received notifications regarding debts to the SGK, some of which date back to the AKP era, and emphasized that the government wants to weaken CHP-run municipalities economically. It was noted that if SGK debts are not restructured and new resources are not provided to municipalities, many will become unable to pay salaries.

The mayors said, "While municipal revenues are decreasing, expenses are rising due to inflation. If SGK debts are not restructured, municipalities will struggle to pay salaries. The interest on these debts should also be waived." The meeting also covered the CHP's upcoming party charter congress next month, the issue of stray animals, and the work and challenges of local governments.
