Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu, who is being tried while in custody, responded to the remarks made about him by Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu during his defense on the 80th day of the IMM trial.
Kılıçdaroğlu, who was appointed as the CHP Chairman with the “absolute nullity” decision dated May 21, had stated in an interview with Euronews Turkish earlier this week that İmamoğlu was “not a political prisoner, nor a person who has been imprisoned due to his political views.”
İmamoğlu, who has been noted as being tried while in custody since March 19, 2025, took the stand at the hearing and responded to Kılıçdaroğlu’s assessment with harsh words.
I am a political captive of the struggle for republic, democracy, and justice, but thank God, I am not a political figure who cannot go out on the streets, who does not walk in the avenues and squares, and who is imprisoned in the conscience of society. May God not let anyone fall into this situation at the age of 80.
