Is the 50+1 rule being abolished? Selvi: Erdoğan-Özel meeting 'could contribute to the political climate'

Hürriyet columnist Abdulkadir Selvi wrote about the Erdoğan-Özel meeting expected to take place next week.

"A NEW POLITICAL CLIMATE..."

Selvi stated, “If the two leaders decide to continue their meetings, it means a new political climate will be experienced. If not, a great opportunity will have been wasted. Turkey needs a new political climate. Otherwise, it cannot go on like this for 4 years. This will be determined by the steps President Erdoğan will take and the approach of Özgür Özel. Özgür Özel can play a very constructive role in this process,” he said.

WILL 50+1 BE CHANGED?

Expressing that the topics Erdoğan and Özel will discuss are important, Selvi stated the view that “certain regulations could be made in the Presidential Government System,” and shared the opinion that “the 50 plus 1 system and alliances could be reviewed.”

Selvi wrote, “The 50 plus 1 system condemns parties with 50 percent to parties with one percent. The same goes for the alliance system. The CHP paid a heavy price for this in the last election. Parties that did not even have 1 percent of the vote secured 39 parliamentary seats on the back of the CHP. This is necessary for the normalization of politics and for it to be freed from the blackmail of small parties.”
