İYİ Party Chairman Müsavat Dervişoğlu followed the third day of the hearing in the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (IMM) case, where Ekrem İmamoğlu presented his defense.
Speaking after the hearing, Dervişoğlu described İmamoğlu's defense as "historic."
Dervişoğlu stated that they have been by İmamoğlu's side since the beginning of the process, noting that this is more than just political courtesy, but rather a "human, conscientious, and moral responsibility."
Stating that the İYİ Party delegation has been following the hearings, Dervişoğlu emphasized that detention should be an exceptional measure.
I watched the hearing on-site today. If you were to ask me whose place I would not want to be in, I would not want to be in the place of this court's prosecutor and judges. Therefore, we watched a historic defense by someone who clearly and plainly laid out all his thoughts, defended rights, law, and justice, and did not even personalize his own usurped rights.
Dervişoğlu said that in the assessments conveyed to him following the hearings, it was expressed that there is no accusation against İmamoğlu that would necessitate detention.
Saying, "Detention is an exceptional situation, it has turned into a means of punishment," Dervişoğlu emphasized the rule of law and justice.
In his statement, Dervişoğlu also touched upon the importance of democracy, personal rights, and freedoms, saying, "I will continue to stand by rights, law, justice, and freedom at all times."
Dervişoğlu expressed his hope that Ekrem İmamoğlu and his colleagues would regain their freedom as soon as possible.
