Justice Minister Yılmaz Tunç meets with DEM Party members: DEM's demand is the improvement of Öcalan's conditions

DEM Party Group Deputy Chair Sezai Temelli shared the details of the meeting held with Justice Minister Yılmaz Tunç. During the meeting, important topics such as the new judicial package and the situation of Öcalan were addressed.

REGULATIONS REGARDING THE JUDICIAL PACKAGE

Temelli stated that regulations would be made for elderly and ill prisoners and that the execution practice known as the "Covid Law" would be expanded. He also conveyed that regulations would be made following the Constitutional Court's annulment of Article 220/6 of the Turkish Penal Code. However, Temelli emphasized that these regulations were insufficient and that the inequalities in the Law on the Execution of Sentences must be addressed.

ÖCALAN'S SITUATION AND DEMANDS

During the meeting, it was stated that the conditions of Abdullah Öcalan, the founder and leader of the terrorist organization PKK, should be improved. Temelli noted that they had conveyed the demand for increased visits to İmralı Island and that Minister Tunç had stated they were acting within the framework of the legislation. Temelli expressed that the current legislation is not sufficient for today's conditions.

THE RIGHT TO HOPE AND THE KOBANI CASE

Stating that the issue of the "Right to Hope" was also brought up during the meeting but would not be included as a specific heading in the new judicial package, Temelli said their priority issue was the improvement of Öcalan's conditions.

He also expressed that the reasoned decision for the Kobani Case had still not been written despite 11 months having passed, and relayed that Minister Tunç had stated this was a matter for the judiciary.

Following the meeting, Temelli stated that it was unclear how their demands would be reflected in the judicial package, but that they had held a positive meeting. He expressed their hope that public expectations would be met.
