Mansur Yavaş reacts to the detention of mayors: The law must be applied equally to everyone
Mansur Yavaş reacted to the detention of Vahap Seçer and two other mayors, emphasizing due process and equal application of the law.
Ankara Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Mansur Yavaş issued a written statement following the detention of Mersin Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Vahap Seçer and two other mayors in the morning hours.
Yavaş stated that procedural rules must be observed in legal processes concerning elected officials, emphasizing that it is standard practice to invite individuals to provide testimony rather than detaining them directly when there is no suspicion of flight or evidence tampering.
Expressing that local governments are open to inspection at all times of the year, Yavaş noted that it is out of the question for documents or records within the municipality to disappear. He stated that allegations of public loss can only be clarified as a result of Court of Accounts audits and judicial processes.
Reminding that there are serious financial allegations and debates regarding public loss that the public expects answers to, Yavaş said that the law must be applied in the same way for everyone. He expressed that different practices would cause the greatest harm to the legal system.
