Ankara Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Mansur Yavaş issued a harsh statement following the resignation of Keçiören Mayor Mesut Özarslan from the Republican People's Party (CHP).
Yavaş characterized Özarslan's decision as an "attitude that casts a shadow over the will of the people of Keçiören" and rejected the situation in no uncertain terms.
"DISRESPECT TO THE WILL OF THE PEOPLE"
In his statement, Yavaş said the following:
"This decision, which casts a shadow over the will of the people of Keçiören, is absolutely unacceptable.
Our fellow citizens made a clear, unambiguous, and indisputable choice at the ballot box; they entrusted the administration of Keçiören to the Republican People's Party, and they did so of their own free will.
If the people of Keçiören had wanted this district to be governed by the AK Party, they would have expressed it clearly and without hesitation at the ballot box. The ballot box is the word of the nation; there can be no justification or calculation that stands above that word.
It must not be forgotten that;
Authority belongs to the nation.
The authority granted at the ballot box belongs directly to the voters, not to individuals or institutions.
This authority is a trust; it cannot be transferred arbitrarily, it cannot change hands, and it cannot be usurped.
Not only has he not had a single complaint about the policies of the Republican People's Party (CHP) until today, but whenever the subject came up, he also categorically denied the allegations that he would 'switch to the AK Party,' which have been circulating for about a month, in front of everyone.
Thousands of party members and thousands of volunteers worked with faith and sacrifice, day and night, without expecting anything in return, to ensure his election. The decision made is not just a political choice; it is an open act of disrespect toward that effort, that faith, and that hard work.
Politics is temporary; positions come and go.
But there are some decisions that are etched into memory.
Because the nation, when the day comes,
will surely remember both what was done to them
and those who ignored them."
