MHP Chairman Devlet Bahçeli made a statement regarding relations between Turkey and Azerbaijan ahead of the Organization of Turkic States Summit to be held in Ankara. Following recent discussions between the two countries, Bahçeli emphasized "common sense, mutual understanding, and collective wisdom."
The debate, which began following reports that students and teachers wearing headscarves were not being admitted to schools in Azerbaijan, had come to the agenda as a topic of political tension on the Ankara-Baku line. In his message, Bahçeli described Turkey and Azerbaijan as "two powerful states of the same heartland."
Stating that the term presidency of the Organization of Turkic States will pass from Azerbaijan to Turkey at the summit to be held at the end of October, Bahçeli expressed that this is an "important responsibility and opportunity." Bahçeli argued that the relations between Turkey and Azerbaijan are one of the strongest pillars of this process.
In his statement, Bahçeli said, "It is of great importance to act on the basis of common sense, mutual understanding, and collective wisdom in the face of any approach aimed at damaging the law of brotherhood between the two countries."
Pointing out that Azerbaijani President İlham Aliyev and President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan will meet within the scope of the summit, Bahçeli noted that they believe this meeting "will once again demonstrate the unshakable will of Turkey-Azerbaijan brotherhood."
Without allowing any seeds of discord to be sown among us that would damage the law of brotherhood and the bond of hearts between the Turkic world, especially Azerbaijan, it is our goal to deepen our cooperation on the basis of mutual respect for the sovereignty and independence of Turkic republics, to build our common future with the consciousness of the responsibility our history has placed upon us, and to unite the goal of the Turkic and Turkish Century with the rise of the Turkic world.
