Message from İmamoğlu on Ali Şekeroğlu: 'We cannot tolerate losing another life'

Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu has issued a message of condolence for Ali Şekeroğlu, a retired police officer who attempted to take his own life during a protest in Ankara where retirees were demanding a flat-rate salary increase, and who later passed away in the hospital.

The 60-year-old Şekeroğlu was severely injured during the protest in front of the Constitutional Court on September 25 and could not be saved despite medical interventions at the hospital. İmamoğlu's statement was shared on the social media account of the Presidential Candidate Office.

Expressing his condolences to Şekeroğlu's relatives and his two children, İmamoğlu stated in his message, "Words are not enough to describe our sorrow and our anger... Unfortunately, no words can bring Ali Bey back... Conscience is gone. Morality is gone."

Drawing attention to the economic conditions of retirees, İmamoğlu said, "I cannot find words for those who condemn retirees to such desperation. We cannot stop until our retirees receive what they are entitled to."

Calling on the IMM administration and other municipalities, İmamoğlu requested an increase in social support for retirees. İmamoğlu stated, "Please, let us focus more on what we can do for our retirees, especially regarding housing and nutrition. Enough is enough! We cannot tolerate losing another life."
