Message on new constitution and referendum from AKP's Yazıcı

The Mediterranean Regional Meeting, organized by the AKP Headquarters Department of Political and Legal Affairs, was held under the chairmanship of AKP Deputy Chairman and Head of Political and Legal Affairs Hayati Yazıcı.

Speaking at the opening of the meeting, Hayati Yazıcı stated, "The Century of Turkey is the name of the vision of a strong economy, strong democracy, strong law, and a strong state. The Century of Turkey is the name of the ideal of a great Turkey that draws strength from its past and builds its future with confidence."

EMPHASIS ON A NEW CONSTITUTION

Touching upon the need for a new constitution in his speech, Yazıcı said, "Making a constitution is the right of the nation. Because the owner of sovereignty is the nation, and the maxim 'Sovereignty belongs unconditionally to the nation' is displayed in the important meeting halls of political institutions, most notably the parliament. Therefore, realizing this depends on demonstrating that this sovereignty is effective in every field."

Yazıcı continued his words as follows:

"When we examine it to this day, our first constitutional movement was in 1876. There is the War of Independence period, the founding process of the Republic, the 1921-1924 constitutions, and we have had two constitutions after transitioning to multi-party democratic life; the 1961 and 1982 constitutions. These constitutions were made by coup plotters. They staged a coup and set aside the will of the nation.

They constructed a constitution by using the right to make a constitution, which belongs to the nation, from wherever they derived that right. We are still governed by a constitution made with this character. One of the most important agenda items of the coming period is to make a new constitution that is the product of the free will of the nation. A well-functioning and institutionalized democracy is our greatest achievement."

"THE FINAL DECISION WILL BELONG TO THE NATION VIA REFERENDUM"

Stating that the new constitution will be submitted to the approval of the nation via referendum, Yazıcı made the following assessments:

“In a period where global and regional developments are accelerating, and wars, conflicts, genocide, and crimes against humanity are becoming commonplace, as Turkey, we seriously aim to be a country that gives hope with a new constitution for humanity. As the AKP, we continue to prepare our ideas and work towards a new constitution. The new constitution commission has also been continuing its work for 1 year.

When a consensus table is established in the Grand National Assembly of Turkey regarding the new constitution, we as the AKP will be ready to initiate the constitution-making process. We sincerely and carefully call on all political parties to contribute to a new and civilian constitution. The demand for a new constitution is not the demand of any political party, but directly the demand of our nation. We evaluate the constitution not as a requirement of daily political calculations or personal goals, but as the guarantee of our nation's future.

We see the new constitution efforts not as an area of political polemic, but as a historical responsibility of our nation. We believe that all political parties should approach this issue with a constructive understanding, far from prejudices. Making a constitution is a monopoly right belonging to our nation. The final word for the constitution, which will be made with the direct and indirect participation of all segments of society, will again be said by the nation; that is, it will come to life through a referendum. Providing our country with a new constitution that will be worthy of Turkey's second century is among our important goals."

STATEMENT ON THE PROCESS

Expressing that an important stage has been reached in the fight against terrorism, Yazıcı also made assessments regarding the second opening process called "Terror-Free Turkey".

Yazıcı said the following:

“Turkey is a country that has paid heavy prices for years due to terrorism. We have given thousands of our children as martyrs. We have had to use billions of dollars of our resources to fight terrorism. With the strong will of our People's Alliance and the determined stance of our state, we have reached a historic point in the fight against terrorism today.

Our goal is a Turkey where terrorism is completely off the agenda, and peace and brotherhood are permanently established. A terror-free Turkey is never just a security goal. It is also a goal of democracy, development, and brotherhood. It is the will to protect the common future of 86 million.

The leaven of this society is sound; we will continue to build with determination today and tomorrow, just as we did yesterday, to make our unity, solidarity, and brotherhood eternal. We are sincere, determined, clear, and resolute on the path to achieving our goal of a terror-free Turkey and a terror-free region. We will never allow the process to be disrupted by perception operations or gossip. Our goal is to strengthen our internal front and build a terror-free Turkey.”

TARGETING THE OPPOSITION

Continuing his speech, Yazıcı also criticized the main opposition party, using the following expressions:

"Instead of producing solutions to the nation's problems, the main opposition party is trying to manage its own political crises. Constantly changing rhetoric, internal conflicts, and leadership debates unfortunately show how far the main opposition has drifted from the country's issues. What Turkey needs is not an opposition that wastes time with fights and internal reckonings, but a strong opposition that contributes to the country's future and carries out executive activities in line with a constructive understanding of politics.

What has been happening in the CHP for a while now only serves to discredit politics. Unfortunately, these events also damage and diminish trust in the political institution. It is sad that those who come to office with the votes of the nation fall into a struggle for seats instead of fulfilling their responsibility to the nation.”
