MHP leader Devlet Bahçeli's 50+1 statement: 'The democratic legitimacy of this system is 50+1 percent!'

President and AKP Chairman Erdoğanhad stated on his flight back from Germany that he wanted the 50+1 percent requirement for presidential elections to be changed. While the MHP's view was being awaited, party officials "Wait for Tuesday" had pointed to today's group meeting.

The highlights from Devlet Bahçeli's statements are as follows:

The secret to our existence in Anatolia for 1,000 years is a precise stance that senses dangers in time and neutralizes threats at their source. Throughout history, Anatolia has been the intersection point of continents, the crossing route of trade corridors, and a field of struggle. It is claimed that geography is destiny. If the coordinates of history are not read correctly, disappointment is inevitable. 

The human treasure is the great Turkish nation. It is the nation that gives its name to the homeland, the nation that gives its name to the country, and the nation that gives its name to the state. The name of the nation is Turkish. The goal of those who want to cast doubt on the concept of nation is clear. When the message of geography and the direction of history's flow are grasped with national consciousness, with God's permission, no vile intention will be able to harm the Turkish nation. 

It is a historical and geographical fact that Turkey, which possesses an imperial legacy, will not remain indifferent to any crisis occurring in its neighboring regions and areas of cultural influence. Every event that unfolds from Damascus to Baghdad, from Karabakh to Jerusalem, from Crimea to Kirkuk, from Kabul to Kashmir, from Skopje to Tripoli, and from Gaza to Cairo will eventually reach Turkey and the Turkish homeland. The day we say 'what does it have to do with us,' we will soon see and experience a poisoned dagger being plunged into our hearts. 

PALESTINE MESSAGE

The defense of our national security must be carried out not from our homeland soil, but from the geography where our bonds of heart and culture are woven into consciences. The peace of Palestine is the peace of Turkey. The stability of Syria is the stability of Turkey; the well-being of Iraq is the well-being of Turkey. Palestine has been under our umbrella of sovereignty since the 16th century. Our noble ancestors connected Palestine under three sanjaks attached to the Damascus Eyalet. Turning our backs on the catastrophe of Gaza, which was our sanjak yesterday, and remaining silent would be a disrespect to our national and spiritual legacies. For us, there can be no such thing as neutrality on this issue. 

PRESIDENTIAL GOVERNMENT SYSTEM

In the new century of the Republic, our most exceptional strength in the process of securing the goals of the Turkish and Turkey Century is the timeless reform made through the April 16 referendum. The chief architect of this reform is the Turkish nation and the People's Alliance, which was born from its spiritual roots. The Presidential Government System has both ensured the transition of the Republic of Turkey to its third phase and concretized its democratic and qualified systemic success. Casting a shadow over the Presidential Government System, which was accepted by the appreciation of the national will, and especially throwing mud with claims of a 'freak system' or 'one-man regime' is not only an injustice but an attack on our nation itself. If the people and the Republic have embraced, and if harmony between the State and the nation has been fully achieved, the main source of this is the Presidential Government System.

The Presidential Government System is by no means a single-use, circumstantial prescription to be crumpled up and thrown into a corner once its job is done!

50+1 STATEMENT

My words in the parliamentary group speech dated July 2, 2019, were exactly as follows: The Presidential Government System is the manifestation of the Republic of Turkey's will to live, its will for permanence, and the indivisible integrity of the state with its country and nation. With the new system, the threshold rising to 50+1 percent has ensured a tremendous embrace. Turkey has finally found and adopted the brilliant management system it was looking for after struggling with many problems!

"Being elected president with 50+1 percent of the vote is a form of pluralist democracy that will be a precedent and a model for the world. Please note, we are not electing a member of parliament, we are not electing a mayor, we are not electing a village head; we are electing the president who will represent the entirety of the people. As the MHP, we are on the same line, with the same thoughts, and the same views today as we were yesterday. However, as the People's Alliance, we also possess the belief and will that any repairs and maintenance that will not damage the nature of the new system will be carried out through mutual understanding and consensus by talking and discussing. We do not give credit to, do not respect, and do not even consider as people those opportunist lunatics who distort our President's aforementioned statement and create discord around the People's Alliance. It is a vile attempt for some intellectually disabled people to write articles asking whether Erdoğan will throw Bahçeli off his back, or to claim that there is a problem between the AKP and the MHP. Thank God, throughout our political life, we have never ridden on anyone's back, nor have we let anyone ride on ours."

"This cabinet is the cabinet of the Republic of Turkey and the Turkish nation. We stand by every decision it makes. The MHP is not a sidekick. It is not interested in personal gain."

Our dialogue with our President is sincere, genuine, honorable, based on justice, and founded on mutual respect and love; no one will be able to come between us.

"WE HAVE NEVER RIDDEN ON ANYONE'S BACK"

We do not even consider those who distort our President's statement and hover around the People's Alliance to be worthy of notice. It is a base attempt for some intellectually challenged individuals to write articles asking whether Erdoğan will throw Bahçeli off his back, or to speak of problems between the AK Party and the MHP. Thank God, throughout our political life—listen carefully here, and answer while you discuss among yourselves—we have never ridden on anyone's back. Nor have we ever let anyone ride on ours.

I believe everyone has received and understood the message. Those who were curious about what I would say and were waiting for chaos and conflict have had to return to their positions of discord, wearing their hats backward and fleeing without looking back. I say to these ignorant people: there is no bread for you here, your gossip mill does not work on us. To the six television channels and their speakers, I say this: your bird-brained minds are not capable of cracking the People's Alliance."

If you are looking for ladies whose hands should be kissed, look at the ladies in the AKP and MHP groups in Parliament. 

RESIGNATIONS IN THE IYI PARTY

The current state of the IYI Party, of course, does not concern us. One reaps what one sows; those who act will find and face the consequences. Remember, winning takes a lifetime, while a moment of negligence is enough to lose. I state that we leave the judgment of these financial matters to the conscience of those who voted for the IYI Party. 

AKŞENER'S 'POLICE CHIEFS' ALLEGATION

The volatile state of the IYI Party does not concern us. Everyone reaps what they sow in their heart. Proving this allegation is a matter of honor. Who are the police chiefs who allow prostitution in their hotels? They must be identified.
