MHP puts the brakes on the government's search for a new system: Bahçeli is not keen on change

As potential revision topics regarding the Presidential Government System are back on the agenda in government circles, it is stated that the MHP, a partner in the People's Alliance, is in favor of preserving the current model. It is noted that MHP Chairman Devlet Bahçeli remains distant from discussions on system changes or a return to a parliamentary system.

According to a report by Cumhuriyet, it is being discussed in political circles that different formulas are being evaluated based on the potential re-candidacy of AKP Chairman and President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and the possibility of reaching the 50+1 percent threshold in elections. In this context, it is alleged that options such as the delegation of authority, the appointment of ministers from among members of parliament, the re-establishment of the undersecretariat office, and increasing the oversight authority of the Parliament are being addressed in studies reportedly being conducted at the Palace.

However, it is reported that the framework of the discussion is being established differently on the MHP front. It is noted that Bahçeli does not view the Presidential Government System as a temporary model or one whose fundamental structure needs to be changed; he is of the opinion that the system strengthens the executive branch, ensures stability in governance, and has ended the era of coalitions.

MHP'S PRIORITY IS LEGISLATIVE REGULATION

According to assessments based on MHP sources, abandoning the Presidential Government System is not on Bahçeli's agenda. Instead, the view that the current model should be institutionalized and strengthened through legal regulations consistent with the system's operation comes to the fore.

It is stated that the topics pointed to in Bahçeli's recent statement should also be read within this framework. Bahçeli had stated, "In the coming period, it is necessary to reorganize political parties and the electoral system with an understanding that is in line with the spirit of the system and based on political stability and democratic development."

It is stated that this statement is evaluated not as a signal for a return to a parliamentary system, but as a demand for the adaptation of the Law on Political Parties and electoral legislation to the Presidential Government System.
