Minister Tunç spoke on rent regulation: No such regulation has taken place

Minister of Justice Yılmaz Tunç answered questions regarding the agenda in Karabük:

When asked whether there would be a new regulation following the removal of the 25 percent rent increase cap, Tunç stated that the relevant article of the Code of Obligations contains provisions on how rent amounts are to be increased and that Parliament did not take this issue onto its agenda as of July 1.

Tunç said, "Therefore, regulations regarding rents will currently proceed within the framework of the permanent articles of the Code of Obligations."

Minister Tunç, reminding that the mediation system has been in practice since 2013, continued as follows:

"Of course, we had recently included rent disputes within the scope of mediation as well. Since September 1, 191 thousand 493 rent disputes have come before mediators. 102 thousand 689 of them resulted in an agreement. So, when we look at it, we see that 54 percent of rent disputes are resolved through mediation. In other words, more than half of them were resolved by the tenant and the landlord reaching an agreement without being referred to the judiciary. Now, there are some regulations aimed at further developing mediation. We are continuing our efforts to make this institution more permanent and to further expand its scope. Previously, those who passed the exam among legal professionals with 5 years of seniority could become mediators. Now, with the new regulation and the new proposal, individuals with 20 years of experience in the legal profession will be able to become mediators without the requirement of an exam, provided they receive mediation training, because we are placing particular importance on experience here."
