Motion crisis in İzmir municipal council: Tensions escalate
A motion submitted by AKP members caused tension during the July ordinary council meeting of the İzmir Metropolitan Municipality. Mayor Cemil Tugay reacted sharply to the motion.
The council meeting, presided over by İzmir Metropolitan Mayor Cemil Tugay, began late due to protests by workers dismissed from municipal subsidiaries. During the meeting, AKP members submitted a motion alleging that some municipal bureaucrats had their ex-spouses establish companies to secure tenders from the municipality.
During the reading of the motion, reactions rose from the CHP benches. Mayor Tugay stated that such motions should not be debated in the council, saying, "If there are such allegations, you should file a criminal complaint with the prosecutor's office," and suggested they submit the motion to the municipality as a petition.
Following these remarks, objections were raised from the AKP benches, and a debate over tone began between CHP and AKP members. The arguments increased tension among the council members.
A dispute also occurred between AKP Council Member Burçin Kevser Sevil and Çeşme Mayor Lal Denizli. This argument ended after Mayor Tugay and other council members intervened.
