Much-discussed behind-the-scenes claim regarding local elections: HEDEP and AKP in indirect talks

There is less than 6 months left until the local elections. While alliance debates continue on the opposition front, the AKP aims to win back the metropolitan municipalities it lost in 2019.

Kısa Dalga columnist Sedat Bozkurt shared striking behind-the-scenes information ahead of the upcoming local elections. Bozkurt stated that HEDEP and the AKP are in indirect contact.

Sedat Bozkurt shared the details of this contact, which was established after the resolution process ended in 2015, with the following statements:

There has long been talk of a traffic of meetings between the AKP and HEDEP that has not been named or gained an official character. This is true. Former politicians who do not have institutional representation duties are meeting. They are also informing their party administrations about these meetings. According to the information I have obtained, these meetings do not take place in the form of friendly chats. HEDEP members are responding to the AKP's local election support models with concrete demands such as the release of political prisoners, the end of the trustee practice, and the lifting of the isolation on Öcalan.

While HEDEP Co-Chair Tülay Hatimoğulları argues that possible alliances for the local elections are possible but should be done openly, it is being discussed in these meetings that strong candidates should be fielded, especially in electoral districts won by the CHP. Although these existing meetings between the AKP and HEDEP are treated as 'chats between 2 old friends from different parties,' the information obtained in these meetings is conveyed to the party administrations.
