Muğla Metropolitan Mayor Ahmet Aras has announced that he has left his membership in the Republican People's Party (CHP). Aras stated that he will continue his mayoral duties as an independent from now on.
Sharing his decision with the public, Aras stated that he will prioritize the needs of Muğla and the will of those living in the city. Reminding that he undertook the mayoral office under the CHP umbrella with the trust and support of his fellow citizens, Aras expressed that he will continue to respect the efforts of his colleagues and the friendships formed.
Aras cited political debates that he claimed have been conducted over him for some time as the reason for his resignation. Arguing that these debates have overshadowed the services provided in Muğla, Aras emphasized that the city has problems waiting to be solved.
In his statement, Aras noted that the office of mayor requires serving all citizens without discrimination, and he stated that he will continue to serve all residents of Muğla with the same approach, regardless of their political views, lifestyles, or where they live.
“The measure of our understanding of service will not change: We will work for a strong infrastructure, safe transportation, protected nature, supported producers, a society strengthened by solidarity, and a livable Muğla that we will leave to our children.”
Aras also stated that he will be open to cooperation with the central government, public institutions, political parties, district municipalities, professional chambers, and non-governmental organizations on issues that are in the interest of Muğla.
Stating that the decision he made does not mean ignoring the past, Aras said, “My side is Muğla. My priority is the peace and welfare of our fellow citizens and the future of our city.”
