New development in the CHP convention case!

The first hearing of the criminal case regarding the Republican People's Party (CHP) 38th Ordinary Convention, held on November 4-5, 2023, took place today at the Ankara 26th Criminal Court of First Instance. The hearing was postponed to January 13.

ALLEGATION OF "OFFERING BENEFITS IN EXCHANGE FOR VOTES"

The case in question is based on allegations that some delegates were offered benefits in exchange for their votes during the CHP's 38th Convention. The indictment prepared by the Ankara Chief Public Prosecutor's Office lists 12 individuals as defendants.

It was stated that the defendants are being tried for "providing benefits in exchange for votes" and "tampering with the voting process," with potential prison sentences ranging from one to three years.

İMAMOĞLU IS AMONG THE DEFENDANTS

It was noted that Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu, as well as numerous other CHP figures, are included as defendants in the case file.

This criminal case is being conducted separately from the "absolute nullity" lawsuit previously filed to cancel the convention. In that case, which concluded on October 24, the Ankara 42nd Civil Court of First Instance ruled that there was no need to cancel the convention, thereby eliminating the possibility of "absolute nullity."

Prior to the criminal case, there was a jurisdictional dispute regarding which court would hear the file. The conflict of jurisdiction between the Criminal Court of First Instance and the High Criminal Court was resolved with the intervention of the Constitutional Court. The High Court decided that the Ankara 26th Criminal Court of First Instance should hear the case.
