New legislative proposal from MHP regarding street interviews

Following President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan's criticisms of street interviews, the MHP has taken action by preparing a legislative proposal on the matter. İsmail Özdemir, MHP Deputy Chairman responsible for Media, Communication, and Digital Channels, announced that they have submitted a bill to the TBMM aimed at ensuring street interviews are conducted only by authorized individuals and imposing penalties on those who do not comply with the rules.

Özdemir stated that in recent years, street interviews have been organized with scripts and that such content aims to create unrest in society. Özdemir said, "The types of these interviews conducted via social media are carried out by individuals who are not affiliated with any press organization or do not hold a press card.

With the legislative proposal we have submitted to the TBMM, the aim is to bring these activities, carried out under the name of street interviews, under control, to ensure they are performed only by authorized individuals, and to ensure that those who act in violation of the rules face criminal sanctions."

PRESIDENT ERDOĞAN'S CRITICISMS

President Erdoğan had previously stated in a statement that street interviews were being used as an element of provocation in society. Erdoğan had expressed his reaction to such activities with the words, "Everyone who picks up a microphone and a camera thinks they are a journalist, and our nation is being openly provoked on the streets. Especially under the name of 'street interviews,' a form of terror is practically being unleashed on the streets."
