Notable meeting between Ahmet Özer and Devlet Bahçeli: He thanked Bahçeli

Esenyurt Mayor Ahmet Özer was released recently after being detained for over a year on grounds related to the 'City Consensus'. After his release, Özer visited MHP Chairman Devlet Bahçeli at his office and provided information about the meeting through a post on social media.

Özer announced his visit with the statement, "I visited MHP Chairman Mr. Devlet Bahçeli and conveyed the greetings of our Chairman Özgür Özel."

Stating that he thanked Bahçeli during the meeting for his contribution to the peace process, Özer said, "As Einstein said, the problems encountered cannot be solved with the same mindset that created them. The process can only be overcome with a sincere, determined, and selfless attitude."

The full text of Özer's statement is as follows:

"I visited MHP Chairman Mr. Devlet Bahçeli and conveyed the greetings of our Chairman Özgür Özel.

Einstein says, 'You cannot solve the problems you face by staying on the same plane of thought that created those problems.' The process, fed by prejudices, rote learning, and fears over the years, can only be overcome with a sincere, determined, and selfless attitude. In this sense, I expressed my gratitude to Mr. Bahçeli for his selfless and sincere contributions to the peace process.

Great duties fall upon everyone and every segment of society to overcome many more difficulties and not to dash hopes. I stated that we, too, will do our part in this historical process.

We had a deep conversation about the issues and contradictions that will directly and indirectly contribute to the peace process.

I touched upon the importance of not excluding anyone for social peace to become permanent, and especially the importance of ending the siege on the CHP during this process.

I mentioned that increasing trust in the judiciary is the cornerstone of the matter, that this is necessary for the peace process to find trust, and that there is a need for confidence-building steps.

I emphasized that trials should not turn into punishment, that there is a need for a softening through trial without detention, that the trustee regime should be ended, and that the implementation of Constitutional Court (AYM) and European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) decisions would contribute to the process. It is obvious that the current decline in trust in the judiciary harms our country's democracy and the peace process.

Now is the time to leave polarization behind and embrace one another. We must definitely achieve this, and this opportunity we have seized must not be squandered under any circumstances. Because this opportunity is of great importance not only for Turkey's internal peace but also for regional peace.

Turkey must solve this problem within democracy and cement living together in peace on an equal basis.

I thank Mr. Bahçeli for his gracious and kind hospitality."
