Özel reacts to the arrest of the Kepez Mayor: 'You cannot declare him a scapegoat'
CHP Chairman Özgür Özel made a statement on the social media platform X regarding the arrest of Kepez Mayor Mesut Kocagöz in the investigation into the cable car accident in Antalya. Özel stated, "You cannot declare our mayor a scapegoat just because he is a member of our party."
In the Konyaaltı district of Antalya, 1 person lost their life and 17 citizens were injured in a cable car accident.
Following the accident, 5 people, including Kepez Mayor Mesut Kocagöz, who served as the manager of ANET, one of the Metropolitan Municipality companies operating the cable car, between 2019 and 2023, were arrested.
CHP Chairman Özgür Özel made a statement on his social media account X.
"THIS DECISION IS POLITICAL, NOT LEGAL"
Özel, citing the disasters in Soma and İliç as examples, noted the following:
“We are closely following the arrest decision and the legal process regarding our Kepez Mayor Mesut Kocagöz in the investigation into the cable car accident in Antalya. However, while the fact remains that public officials were not investigated in any of the cases from Soma to İliç, this decision is political, not legal. Undoubtedly, no one who had a hand in the accident should be spared. This is our red line. With this sensitivity, we will continue to closely follow the judicial investigation into the cable car accident, but you cannot declare our mayor a scapegoat just because he is a member of our party.”
