Özgür Özel had promised: Primary elections and presidential candidacy work in CHP

CHP leader Özgür Özel had promised at the party congress held shortly before the local elections that "candidates would be determined through primary elections."

According to a report by Başak Kaya from Sözcü; work is underway for a charter amendment within the CHP.

Evaluating demands for term limits alongside primary elections, the CHP Headquarters has collected nearly 7,000 amendment requests by consulting with former deputies, party administrators, and members of the Party Assembly following the local elections.

The new charter is expected to increase quotas for women and youth in parliamentary candidacies.

The Chairman's quota, which is currently 15 percent, is being reduced to 5 percent. There is also a push to introduce a quota for experienced deputies. Furthermore, there is a proposal to make it mandatory for members voting in primary elections to cast a vote for one female candidate and one candidate with a background in civil society or labor unions.

The goal is also to determine the presidential candidate through broad participation. The plan is to reach a joint decision based on poll results, as well as the opinions of members and party boards.

A party congress for the charter is being planned for September, which is expected to begin in Sivas, continue in Ankara, and last at least 2 days.
