Özgür Özel reacts to Mehmet Uçum's election calculation

CHP Chairman Özgür Özel reacted to Chief Advisor to the President Mehmet Uçum's statement pointing to March or April 2028 for elections.

Speaking at a press conference held after his meeting with the co-chairs of the DEM Party, Özel stated that they would not support moving the election date forward by a short period.

Responding to a question regarding the demand for early elections, Özel said, "We see moving the elections forward by a few weeks or a month not as an early election, but as circumventing the Constitution. We are closed to this discussion."

Özel's statements are as follows:

"Apart from this, there are two groups left that could reach this number. The esteemed Co-Chair also says, we have no such meeting or conversation. Then let Mehmet Uçum explain from whom he received the commitment that he says 'this date is finalized,' which puts the will of the parliament under mortgage. I mean, I cannot tell you to go and ask this question to an unelected chief advisor. If Mehmet Uçum is referring to the remaining group of a political party that they have intervened in with nullity, then either Mehmet Uçum should explain that issue or everyone should define their own position correctly.

If they are saying that they received a commitment of support for early elections from there as a product of the nullity attempt made against the Republican People's Party, let them say so. Because there is no situation to ask another party. There are three possibilities here. The IYI Party's approach is already clear and its numbers are not sufficient in this sense. Even if the IYI Party were to say yes for a moment, one more of the three groups still needs to provide support. Neither the New Path Group nor the IYI Party Group possesses the number of deputies that could provide the sought-after support. With 90 deputies, we are saying we are not in. The DEM Party says, 'Such a topic was not discussed, such a thing is not on our agenda.' Then is Mehmet Uçum expressing 'nullity' or what kind of arithmetic has he constructed to defend his domination over the Parliament, that needs to be looked at.

The problem is the problem of those sitting in the Palace seeing themselves above the Parliament, the problem is that all decisions are made from the Palace from a single source."
