Özgür Özel reacts to Yunus Emre Göçer case: Points to the government

CHP Chairman Özgür Özel made statements following his visit to the family of motorcycle courier Yunus Emre Göçer, who died after being struck by a vehicle driven by Mohammed Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, the son of Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud.

"I AM NOT IN A POSITION TO ANSWER THE QUESTIONS HIS MOTHER IS ASKING"

Expressing concern that Mohammed Hassan Sheikh Mohamud might receive preferential treatment following his visit with Yunus Emre Göçer's family, Özgür Özel said, "I was not in a position to answer the questions his mother was asking. Those who govern this country must answer these questions."

Özel stated the following:

"But when it is the son of a foreign statesman, what kind of privilege is this? What kind of public administration is this? I was not in a position to answer the questions his mother was asking. Those who govern this country must answer these questions. The Republic of Turkey must follow this matter both internationally and domestically. According to international law, there is much that can be done even if someone who commits a crime leaves the country. We will see if these are being followed up on seriously. We consider the fact that no visit has been made to the family by the relevant country's embassy so far as a discourtesy both to Turkey and to the family."

CONCERN OVER 'FAVORITISM'

Özgür Özel stated that the attack by Ankaragücü President Faruk Koca on FIFA-licensed referee Halil Umut Meler was an attack on Turkey's international reputation.

Stating that he is concerned that Faruk Koca might be favored due to his closeness to AKP President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, Özgür Özel apologized to Halil Umut Meler and his family on behalf of the Turkish nation for the attack, as well as on behalf of all those responsible.

Özel used the following expressions:

"Last night, we faced an incident that embarrassed us all and disgraced us before the world. Now, on all the world's television channels, they are talking about the punch thrown at our world-renowned referee in Turkey, and the kicks he received after falling to the ground. Every kick thrown there was also aimed at Turkey's international reputation. The kick and the punch thrown there were aimed at all of us. Because the person is a former deputy from the ruling party, because he is a host to Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, and because in our past practice there have been many instances where people were immediately favored after issues that caused social trauma in similar situations faded from the public agenda, we are all worried about this. This act must be punished. We apologize to our very valuable referee and his family on behalf of the Turkish nation for that punch and those kicks, on behalf of all those responsible. Those who caused these images must be held accountable."
