Release decisions have been issued for two CHP municipal council members who were arrested before the deputy mayoral election at Üsküdar Municipality. It was reported that Deputy Mayor Amine Cansu Çelik was released on September 22 under house arrest, and Üsküdar and Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (İBB) Council Member Ekrem Baki was also released yesterday with a house arrest order.
According to information provided by journalist İsmail Saymaz, Çelik and Baki were arrested on September 5, shortly before the deputy mayoral election at Üsküdar Municipality was renewed. Following this development, the balance of seats in the municipal council changed, and the election was held again on September 8.
In the renewed deputy mayoral election, AKP candidate Dündar Ziya Gültekin and CHP candidate Sibel Tan Çetinkaya competed. At the end of four rounds, Gültekin received 23 votes, while Çetinkaya remained at 19 votes. With this result, the administration of Üsküdar Municipality passed to the AKP.
Saymaz drew attention to the fact that the two individuals arrested before the election were released after the AKP candidate won the election. It was stated that the release decisions for both individuals were granted with the condition of house arrest.
