Poll worker fees announced

The countdown has begun for the local elections on March 31, 2024. Millions of voters will head to the polls in 2 months to determine their mayors and neighborhood heads (muhtars).

While the Supreme Election Council's (YSK) preparations for the local elections continue, some citizens will also serve at the polls.

The fees that poll workers will receive for the local elections have become a subject of curiosity. Poll worker fees are calculated based on the civil servant salary coefficient.

Accordingly, it is expected that 2,947 TL will be paid to ballot box chairpersons, 2,088 TL to ballot box clerks, 1,044 TL to party-affiliated members, and 2,936 TL to building supervisors.

The difference of approximately 900 TL between the fees of the ballot box chairperson and the ballot box clerk is notable. This difference is attributed to the fact that the ballot box chairperson assumes the majority of the responsibility from the beginning to the end of the election process.

The building supervisor, on the other hand, receives a higher fee than other staff because they are responsible for preparing the environment necessary for the ballot box committee to work.

POLL WORKER APPLICATION REQUIREMENTS

Those who wish to serve at the polls during the election should follow the announcements of the election boards for poll worker application requirements.

The following requirements are generally sought to become a poll worker:

• Being a citizen of the Republic of Turkey,
• Being 18 years of age or older,
• Not having membership in any political party,
• Not having been convicted of any crime.

HOW TO BECOME A POLL WORKER?

To serve on a ballot box committee on election day, one must apply to the relevant election board presidency based on their place of residence. Applications for election poll workers will be made according to the announcements made by the district election boards.

Applications usually open a few months before the election. There are two types of poll workers. The first, the ballot box committee member, is determined by the Supreme Election Council (YSK) from among civil servants.

The second is the party-affiliated poll worker. Applications for the poll workers of the political parties participating in the election are made to the YSK.

Parties notify the YSK of the individuals they will designate as poll workers, and an application form is filled out for this purpose; this is not done online, and it is necessary to apply to the YSK in person.
