Preparations for a new peace process commission in the Turkish Parliament: Kurtulmuş invites all parties

While the resolution process, which has been debated in Turkish politics for years, has returned to the agenda in the shadow of the Iran-Israel war, a notable statement has come from the DEM Party. Speaking at a press conference in the Turkish Grand National Assembly (TBMM), DEM Party Group Deputy Chair Gülistan Kılıç Koçyiğit announced that Parliament Speaker Numan Kurtulmuş has sent invitations to the group deputy chairs of all political parties as a new step regarding the resolution process.

Koçyiğit stated, "We would like to express our great satisfaction with this call regarding the social peace and democratization commission. Initiating this process before Parliament goes into recess is an extremely important development."

Stating that the DEM Party also has preparations for this process, Koçyiğit emphasized that the commission in question should not be limited to political parties. In the proposal they have prepared, she expressed that the commission should have a structure based on broad participation, democracy, and social consensus.

"We believe that this commission will contribute to ending the conflict process that our country has been in for years and to opening the path to peace," said Koçyiğit, adding that the legal framework of the process should also be discussed.

"THE PROCESS MUST BE TRANSPARENT, THE OPPOSITION MUST NOT BE EXCLUDED"

Drawing attention to the lack of "transparency" often voiced in past resolution processes, Koçyiğit stated that this time the process must be conducted in a transparent manner where all segments of society can be informed.

"Our most fundamental issue, the Kurdish question, needs to be resolved through a transparent process that includes the political opposition. This commission process must also have a mechanism where opposition parties can contribute and the public can follow it moment by moment," she said.

Stating that the commission to be established should not remain a temporary structure, Koçyiğit proposed the construction of a permanent structure that is not limited to writing reports, but can open new topics as it progresses and offer concrete proposals.

"We are talking about a structure that is not just a technical commission, but one that can mediate the socialization of peace, address the issue in depth, and offer realistic solution proposals," she said.

Parliament Speaker Numan Kurtulmuş also stated in a recent statement that Parliament should take an active role in the resolution process. "We see that there is social support for this process in a very large part of Turkey. It is mandatory for Parliament to get involved in the next stage of the process," said Kurtulmuş, who had expressed his hope that the commission would be established before Parliament goes into recess.
