Mahmut Övür, a columnist for the pro-government newspaper Sabah, made notable assessments regarding the "fund" scandal that has emerged in capital markets and is said to involve the names of certain AKP figures and bureaucrats.
In his column, Övür stated that the mention of symbolic names within the AKP, such as former Minister of Family and Social Policies Fatma Betül Sayan Kaya, in the file has caused discomfort among the party's base. According to Övür, even though the government intervened in the process from the very first day, the resulting picture has caused a harsh reaction among AKP voters.
"Even though the government took hold of the fund scandal from the very first day to manage it and do what is necessary, the resulting picture and the involvement of symbolic names like former Minister Fatma Betül Sayan Kaya in the scandal have led to a harsh reaction in the AK Party base."
Stating that a "deep embarrassment" is felt within the AKP base, Övür wrote that President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan has therefore approached the matter strictly from the very first days. The column also conveyed that Erdoğan said, "I will personally handle it," regarding the political and administrative dimensions.
The Sabah columnist argued that the AKP base does not embrace the individuals mentioned in the file, but rather expects "what is necessary to be done." Övür expressed the view that if the process is managed correctly, the AKP could emerge from this scandal "cleansed and strengthened."
While the investigation in question has sparked debate in the public eye, it was noted that Emre Alkin, who writes a column for Sabah, was among those arrested. The fact that Sabah did not give extensive coverage to the issue on its front page in the early days of the scandal had also been a subject of criticism.
