Referee betting scandal on the Parliament's agenda! Striking questions for Minister Bak

Following the statements made by Turkish Football Federation (TFF) President İbrahim Ethem Hacıosmanoğlu, IYI Party Group Deputy Chairman Turhan Çömez has brought the betting scandal to the Grand National Assembly of Turkey (TBMM). According to a report by Cumhuriyet, Çömez submitted a written parliamentary question to the Minister of Youth and Sports, Osman Aşkın Bak, requesting information regarding the identities of the referees who placed bets and the matches in which they officiated.

Hacıosmanoğlu had stated that 571 referees officiating in professional leagues were examined and that 371 of them had accounts with six different betting companies. It was revealed that 152 of these referees had directly placed bets on football matches, while 10 referees had placed bets on more than 10 thousand matches. Furthermore, it was determined that one referee had placed bets on 18 thousand 227 matches. Çömez emphasized that these allegations must be clarified in detail.

DEMAND FOR INVESTIGATION IN PARLIAMENT

Çömez directed the following questions to Minister Bak:

  • Who are the referees identified as having placed bets, and which matches did they officiate?
  • Did these referees also place bets on the matches they officiated?
  • When were the referees who placed bets identified, and have they officiated any matches since then?
  • Have any disciplinary or administrative sanctions been applied to the referees?
  • Which platforms were used while placing bets?

Çömez stated that a transparent investigation must be conducted so that these allegations do not become a dark stain on the history of Turkish sports.
