Şamil Tayyar speaks out on Melih Gökçek: 'Those laughing today may have to mourn tomorrow'
Following the summons of Melih Gökçek to testify as a suspect, Şamil Tayyar made a notable post stating that he had spoken with Gökçek.
Former AKP deputy Şamil Tayyar announced that he had spoken with former Ankara Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Melih Gökçek, who was summoned to testify as a suspect as part of an investigation into allegations of "unregistered money transfers to companies abroad."
In a post on his social media account, Tayyar stated that Gökçek was in good spirits. Conveying that Gökçek told him, "Our necks are thinner than a hair before justice," Tayyar described this attitude as "mature."
Tayyar stated, "I do not expect an arrest; I think if there were such an intention, at least a detention procedure would have been carried out. It feels like there is a 'Perfect Storm' on the horizon. Those laughing at Gökçek today may have to mourn tomorrow."
In his post, Tayyar referenced the film "The Perfect Storm," starring George Clooney, using the analogy of a wave formed by the merging of storms rising from two different fronts.
The full text of the statement made by Tayyar on his X account is as follows:
"Melih Gökçek is going to the prosecutor's office on Friday to testify.
I spoke with him just now, his morale is high.
He says, 'Our necks are thinner than a hair before justice.'
A mature attitude.
And then?
I do not expect an arrest; I think if there were such an intention, at least a detention procedure would have been carried out.
And after that?
Those who have watched the film 'The Perfect Storm,' starring George Clooney, will remember.
It tells the drama of a fishing boat capsized by a wave formed when storms rising from two separate fronts in the North Atlantic merge at one point.
It feels like there is a 'Perfect Storm' on the horizon.
Those laughing at Gökçek today may have to mourn tomorrow."
HOW DID THE INVESTIGATION START?
The investigation was launched ex officio following allegations by journalist Murat Ağırel regarding Gökçek and his family. Ağırel had drawn attention to the increase in the Gökçek family's real estate assets abroad; he announced that he had testified as a witness as part of the investigation and had submitted the documents in his possession to the prosecutor's office.
Melih Gökçek, for his part, denied the allegations against him and stated that he was ready to provide information to the prosecutor's office. Gökçek is expected to testify as part of the investigation conducted by the Ankara Chief Public Prosecutor's Office.
