September 12 message from Numan Kurtulmuş: 'The time has come to get rid of the 1982 Constitution'

"Parliament Speaker Numan Kurtulmuş, in the message he shared on his social media account for the anniversary of the September 12, 1980 coup, noted the following:

"The September 12, 1980 coup has taken its place in history as one of the greatest betrayals against our democracy, leaving deep wounds in the memory of our noble nation.

In those dark days, the will of our nation was ignored, and the rights and freedoms of our citizens were usurped.

The lawlessness, unjust trials, torture, and executions experienced after the coup have deeply affected our social conscience.

This dark period is one of the most painful examples of what can be faced when one drifts away from democracy.

The September 12 coup was also an imperialist intervention attempt that targeted our country's independence.

This coup period, which set Turkey back for years in economic, political, and social terms, was the result of internal and external interventions carried out to darken our country's future.

This process, which brought with it social polarization, the restriction of freedoms, and the shadow of military tutelage, also damaged our nation's sense of self-confidence by disregarding the rule of law.

The damages brought to our country by coups were not limited to political and economic losses; they also hindered social reconciliation and democratic maturation.

Every coup has been etched into memory as a great betrayal that set Turkey back in every field.

It is now time to leave the traces of coups behind and get rid of the 1982 Constitution, which is one of the greatest remnants of the coup eras.

On this occasion, we respectfully commemorate all our citizens who lost their lives, were tried unjustly, were subjected to torture, and had their rights taken away during the ruthless processes of the September 12 coup, and we reiterate our promise to continue our struggle for democracy, freedoms, and our values without forgetting the wounds this dark period has opened in our social memory."
