Sezgin Tanrıkulu visits Selahattin Demirtaş

Deputy Chairman of the Turkish Grand National Assembly's Human Rights Investigation Commission and CHP Diyarbakır Deputy Sezgin Tanrıkulu visited former HDP Co-Chair Selahattin Demirtaş and former Diyarbakır Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Selçuk Mızraklı, who are currently imprisoned in Edirne Prison. Tanrıkulu made statements to the press in front of the prison following the meeting.

Stating that Demirtaş and Mızraklı were in good spirits, Tanrıkulu said the main agenda of the meeting was "peace and the permanent silencing of weapons." Tanrıkulu stated, "Both of our friends intend to fulfill whatever duties fall upon them to ensure that weapons and violence are permanently eliminated. They particularly emphasized that the Turkish Grand National Assembly, opposition parties, and society must provide strong support to this process."

"THE ORGANIZATION'S CONGRESS DECISION IS IMPORTANT"

Tanrıkulu conveyed that there is an expectation for the organization to convene its congress as soon as possible and reach a final decision. "They desire this and are waiting for the necessary conditions to be met," Tanrıkulu said, continuing his remarks:

"The disarmament process could be an important step that paves the way for Turkey's democratization and social peace. However, if this process proceeds slowly, it could become vulnerable to abuses and provocations, as we have experienced in the past. For this reason, they expressed that everyone must take steps with good intentions and speed."

"STEPS MUST BE TAKEN WITH SOCIAL CONSENSUS"

Stating that Demirtaş and Mızraklı drew attention not only to the silencing of weapons but also to unjust imprisonments, Tanrıkulu spoke as follows:

"My personal opinion is in the same direction. There are many people in prisons in Turkey as a result of unfair trials. Making an arrangement on this matter is important for social peace and democracy. We believe that Parliament, the government, opposition parties, and the President must do their part regarding the organization laying down its arms and the rapid implementation of democratic steps."
