Socialist parties' May Day choice is clear: Where will they be?
With days left until May Day, the Istanbul provincial organizations of Halkevleri, the Labour Party (EMEP), the Left Party (SOL Parti), the Workers' Party of Turkey (TİP), and the Communist Movement of Turkey (TKH) have announced where they will be on May 1.
Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya's announcement that Taksim Square is off-limits for May Day has led socialist parties to make their May Day decision.
MEETING AT SARAÇHANE
The Istanbul organizations of the Labour Party (EMEP), Halkevleri, the Left Party (SOL Parti), the Workers' Party of Turkey (TİP), and the Communist Movement of Turkey (TKH) have issued a call to meet at Saraçhane at 10:00 AM on May 1 to march to Taksim.
The joint statement included the following remarks:
"They want to interrupt the working class's collective memory of struggle by closing off Taksim, which has gained historical and urban significance through the struggle of Turkey's working class, to laborers. By not recognizing the Constitutional Court's ruling, they are trampling even the laws they created themselves and continue to violate the right to organize demonstrations. The demand for a humane life and working conditions, and the struggle for an equal and free life, which they try to prevent with bans and oppression, is the struggle of workers and laborers."
"LET US GIVE A STRONG RESPONSE"
The statement continued with the following remarks:
"The mass unity and struggle of the working class against the attacks of capital, poverty, unemployment, workplace homicides, and exploitation is the only option that will break through all bans.
Expanding this option requires those who stand before the class struggle to act with the responsibility of uniting the growing anger of workers and laborers with the demand for a humane life and bringing it to the squares.
On the International Workers' Day of Unity, Solidarity, and Struggle, let us stand together with all our strength against the attacks of capital!
On May 1, with our unity and our shared determination of will, let us give a strong response to the government trying to ban May Day, to the representatives of the capitalist class trying to 'bring May Day into line,' and to the capitalist class trying to cast a shadow over May Day.
Laborers who will march to Taksim Square from all corners of Istanbul, from Saraçhane and Beşiktaş, will give a strong response to the attacks of capital.
In this direction, as the institutions signed below, we are coming together on May 1, 2024, for equality, freedom, independence, secularism, and justice against the economic destruction policies of capital and the AKP.
We call on all laborers in Istanbul to meet at Saraçhane at 10:00 AM on May 1 to march to Taksim."
