Statement from CHP! Decision made to continue with Lütfü Savaş's candidacy

The Republican People's Party (CHP) has reached a decision regarding Lütfü Savaş's candidacy in Hatay. In a statement issued by the party's headquarters, it was announced that, following final evaluations, the decision was made to continue with Lütfü Savaş's candidacy.

"IT HAS BEEN DECIDED TO CONTINUE WITH LÜTFÜ SAVAŞ'S CANDIDACY"

The statement included the following:

“As a result of the final evaluations made regarding our party's Hatay Metropolitan Municipality mayoral candidacy; upon the requests and consensus of our provincial organization, our district organizations, and our district mayoral candidates, it has been decided to continue with Lütfü Savaş's candidacy. We present this to the public.”

WHAT HAD HAPPENED?

With the decision taken by the CHP Party Assembly (PM) on January 10, the incumbent Hatay Metropolitan Mayor Lütfü Savaş was re-nominated for the March 31, 2024 Local Elections. After his candidacy was announced, Savaş was protested by the people of Hatay on the anniversary of the February 6 earthquakes.

The name of Savaş, whose candidacy had become a subject of debate, was not read out at the 31 March Local Elections Candidate Introduction Meeting held by the CHP in Ankara the other day. This led to interpretations that the Hatay Metropolitan Municipality mayoral candidate might be changed.

CHP Chairman Özgür Özel met with Lütfü Savaş at the CHP Headquarters on Monday, February 19. The meeting, which began at 10:40, lasted approximately 45 minutes. CHP Secretary General Selin Sayek Böke, Deputy Chairman Gökan Zeybek, Hatay Deputy Mehmet Güzelmansur, and Hatay Provincial Chairman Hakan Tiryaki were also present at the meeting.

Lütfü Savaş left the Headquarters without making a statement after the meeting.
