Statement from DEM Party regarding Murat Kurum
Holding a press conference at the Turkish Grand National Assembly (TBMM), Peoples' Equality and Democracy Party (DEM Party) Group Deputy Chair Sezai Temelli commented on the AKP's Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (İBB) candidate Murat Kurum, stating, "With these project candidates, we clearly see that they are actually chasing urban rents and that the government's obsession with this rent-seeking continues."
Peoples' Equality and Democracy Party (DEM Party) Group Deputy Chair Sezai Temelli celebrated January 10, Working Journalists Day, during a press conference he held at the Parliament.
Making statements regarding the agenda, Temelli noted that it is not possible to speak of press freedom in Turkey and that the public's right to receive information is being obstructed. Temelli mentioned that the regulation regarding granting green passports to journalists has recently come to the agenda, and that it remains to be seen what kind of discrimination will be experienced in this regard.
Commenting on the economy, Temelli criticized the government's policy, stating, "We are a country that has entered the top 10 in the misery index. The only target that Mehmet Şimşek, who claims to have met his economic targets, has actually met is this misery index target."
"A PERSON ASSOCIATED WITH ZONING AMNESTY"
Temelli also made the following comments regarding the local elections and Murat Kurum, who was announced as the AKP's İBB candidate:
"Local elections will actually emerge as an important election in Turkey today. We will not only be determining mayors and municipal council members. We will actually be deciding together how Turkey will evolve in the coming period. We want to underline that local elections are an important threshold as a struggle for democracy. Candidates are being announced, and when we look at these candidates, a clear picture emerges: urban rights or urban rents? With these project candidates, we clearly see that they are actually chasing urban rents and that the government's obsession with this rent-seeking continues. They announced as the İBB mayoral candidate a person who is associated with zoning amnesty and whose projects have never been implemented, which once again shows us that an approach unrelated to urban rights will pursue urban rents. As the DEM Party, we will continue to fight for urban rights. We will send the trustees to the dustbin of history, never to return."
