MHP Chairman Devlet Bahçeli made an assessment regarding President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan’s invitation of Azerbaijani President İlham Aliyev to the Organization of Turkic States (OTS) Summit to be held in Ankara.
Speaking after a joint meeting of his party’s Central Executive Board, Central Disciplinary Board, and members of parliament, Bahçeli stated that the invitation is important in terms of “preserving the historical and strategic significance” of Turkey-Azerbaijan relations.
Bahçeli noted that the ties between the two countries are beyond daily political developments and temporary disagreements, stating that differences of opinion can occur between states. He emphasized that such issues should be resolved “without damaging the law of brotherhood, through mutual understanding and direct dialogue.”
Expressing that maintaining mutual trust between Turkey and Azerbaijan is also important for the future of the Turkic world, Bahçeli argued that regional developments must be closely monitored in terms of Turkey’s security and sovereign rights.
In a phone call with Aliyev on October 21, Erdoğan celebrated the 35th anniversary of Azerbaijan’s independence and invited Aliyev to the 13th OTS Summit in Ankara.
Recently, tension had arisen between Turkey and Azerbaijan following statements made in Turkey regarding the headscarf practice in schools in Azerbaijan. The Baku administration declared 31 people from Turkey “persona non grata” and banned their entry into the country.
Bahçeli also announced that the 15th Ordinary Grand Congress of the MHP will be held on Sunday, February 7, 2027.
