Statement on Can Atalay from AKP's Elitaş: 'The outcome will not be legal'

The Grand National Assembly of Turkey (TBMM) will convene in an extraordinary session on Friday at the call of opposition parties regarding the process of stripping the parliamentary status of Şerafettin Can Atalay, who was elected as a deputy for Hatay from the Workers' Party of Turkey (TİP). 

'IT WILL NOT BE LEGAL'

Speaking at the AKP's 23rd anniversary event, the party's Deputy Chairman Mustafa Elitaş argued that it was not correct to expect a result from Friday's meeting and that any outcome would not be legal.

Elitaş claimed that Atalay was already in detention before being elected as a deputy and that the TBMM had not held any vote regarding Atalay, asserting that Atalay's situation is different from that of Enis Berberoğlu and Ömer Faruk Gergerlioğlu, who were subjected to judicial processes while already holding their parliamentary seats.

CRITICISM OF CHP REGARDING THE CONSTITUTION

Mustafa Elitaş said, "The CHP has made a call to determine the stance of the TBMM regarding Can Atalay's parliamentary status. Instead of this, they should consider that there is an obligation to draft a constitution worthy of the 21st century and a democratic Turkey, rather than one forced upon us under a military uniform, which would resolve these disputes entirely."
