Suspicion of 'instigator' in attack on Özgür Özel: Chief Public Prosecutor's Office expands investigation

The investigation into the physical attack on CHP Chairman Özgür Özel, which took place following a ceremony held for DEM Party MP and Deputy Speaker of the Grand National Assembly of Turkey Sırrı Süreyya Önder at the Atatürk Cultural Center in Taksim, has been deepened.

While the situation of Özel, who was subjected to a punch attack by 66-year-old Selçuk Tengioğlu as he left the funeral ceremony, has caused widespread repercussions in the public eye, the Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor's Office has begun to investigate whether the incident was limited to a single perpetrator.

IS THERE AN INSTIGATOR?

According to information obtained from Chief Public Prosecutor's Office sources, all possibilities regarding whether there is an instigator or an organization behind the attack are being meticulously examined. It was stated that official letters have been sent to relevant institutions as part of the investigation and that camera footage is being analyzed in detail.

The Ministry of Interior had announced that the perpetrator of the attack, Selçuk Tengioğlu, was convicted of murdering his two children in 2004 and was released in 2020 under the former execution law.
