The government's new goal has become clear: A message on a new constitution from Kurtulmuş
Parliament Speaker Numan Kurtulmuş stated that the "political climate has matured" following the adoption of the Framework Law with 467 votes.
Parliament Speaker Numan Kurtulmuş made notable remarks regarding discussions on a new constitution after the legislative proposal known in the public as the "Framework Law" was accepted in Parliament with 467 votes.
When asked during his appearance at the AA Editör's Desk whether Turkey could derive the necessary consensus for drafting a new constitution from the current political climate, Kurtulmuş gave the message that "a new constitution is essential" and stated that he believes the process has matured.
In his statement, Kurtulmuş used the following expressions: "I believe that the political climate has now matured, and that Turkey is capable of drafting a new constitution, capable of drafting a civilian constitution. We will fulfill our responsibility in this regard, whatever it may be. This picture is one that encourages such behavior."
The broad support for the Framework Law vote also brought about interpretations in political circles that the government is gauging the parliamentary arithmetic and opposition support for a constitutional amendment.
In opposition circles, the view is being expressed that the new constitution agenda aims to pave the way for President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan's re-candidacy through an amendment that would be passed by Parliament without going to a referendum.
