These are the final words of Deniz Gezmiş!

Deniz Gezmiş, about whom one of the greatest poets of Turkish literature, Can Yücel, said, "If revolution is the longest race/ In Turkey too/ He ran its most beautiful hundred meters," was sent to the gallows on a May 6 morning 52 years ago.

The final words spoken by Deniz Gezmiş, one of the most daring figures of the youth movement, before his execution, hold an important place in the struggle for full independence in Turkey.

We share with our readers the article by writer Serpil Çelenk Güvenç, daughter of Halit Çelenk, which covers the final moments of the 'three saplings' and includes Deniz's last words:

We felt that we were very close to one of the greatest political murders in Turkish history, which the March 12 military junta would carry out with the support of the Justice Party led by Süleyman Demirel and other right-wing party deputies... And on the night of May 5, our door was knocked. Those who came were there to take my father, Halit Çelenk, to the Ulucanlar Prison where the executions would take place. My father got dressed and left... I remember that when he returned home in the morning of that long night with lawyer Mükerrem Erdoğan, his face was ashen and the gray in his hair had visibly increased...

THE FINAL WORDS OF DENİZ GEZMİŞ

Deniz's final words were as follows:

“Long live a fully independent Turkey!
Long live the supreme ideology of Marxism-Leninism!
Long live the independence struggle of the Turkish and Kurdish peoples!
Down with imperialism!
Long live the workers and peasants!”

These final words did not appear in the press or any publication and could not be voiced due to the existence of Articles 141/142 of the Turkish Penal Code. However, that typewritten page was reproduced. The sentences that Deniz, Yusuf, and Hüseyin shouted under the gallows spread like waves to every corner of Turkey.
